Has anyone ever taken Hydrocodone?
I had major surgery Thursday and was taking a full Hydro pill every 4 hours. I went from a whole pill to a half. My last 1/2 pill was today at 10am then again at 2pm, it's 8pm now. Well I'm feeling weird. It's hard to type, concentrate, and I feel panicky. Any suggestions? It's hard to eat so I've been on a liquid diet. Could I feel weird from lack of food? I feel like having a panic attack, help!
I have both personal as well as professional experience with hydrocodone use. First you mentioned, "a full hydro pill." The doesn't give me enough information. In the US, hydrocodone is rarely available as a single-entity preparation; it is usually marketed in combination with another ingredient, such as acetaminophen (commonly know as Tylenol) and less frequently with ibuprofen (Motrin/Advil). To confuse you even more, these products are available in a host of combinations of these ingredients in various ratios. The most common ratio is 5mg of hydrocodone with 500mg acetaminophen. The amount of hydrocodone in these combination products ranges from 2.5 mg to 10mg.
Hydrocodone is a semi-synthetic opioid (formerly called an opiate) that is used for mild to moderate pain relieve. It is used frequently for post-op pain from dental procedures, from minor surgical procedures, after traumatic injuries (think car accident or sports injuries), kidney stones, etc. It is not effective for pain related to major surgery or in patients with terminal cancer.
Side effects from hydrocodone vary from person to person. Most folks experience few to no side effects; the only effect they experience is adequate pain relief. Those that do experience side effects, they are usually mild and self-limiting and most often dissappear after a couple of doses. Many people cannot tolerate opioids at all, either due to a true allergic reations, or because they just happen to be very sensitive to the effects of the drug. Some people suffer severe nausea and vomiting whenever they take an opioid. This is not a true allergic reaction, yet they are so sensitive to the drug that they should not use opioids at all.
The most common side effects are drowsiness, lethargy, slurred speech, slow reaction time, difficultly walking or operating machinery. Yet a small percentage of people experience an intense euphoria and feel energized after taking an opioid. Ironically it is these people who are most prone to developing an unhealthy, addictive relationship with opioids.
All opioids can have significant mental effects on patients that have little to no prior experience with these medications. Your lack of adequate food intake may also be playing a role. You should only use hydrocodone when needed for pain that is interfering with your ability to function normally - on an as needed basis. The only people that should take pain medications on a routine schedule are patients with severe chronic pain, such as terminally ill cancer patients or patients with other forms of intractable pain (such as chronic neck pain or back pain), but only under a physician's care.
If possible you need to increase your nutritional intake based on your doctor's advice, whether in the form of a liquid diet or solid foods. It would be unusual for a patient to experience panic or anxiety in this situation; the question is whether it's drug induced or caused by lack of nutrition or possible dehydration, or by the post-op trauma from the surgery.
Get some rest, reduce your anxiety, and talk with your treatment providers. Most likely your feelings of discomfort will disappear on their own in a few days. But adequate hydration, food intake, exercise as tolerated, with limited use of a narcotic pain reliever should have you feeling back to normal rather quickly.
