A life in academia was a natural career path for Jing Kong, the daughter of
two Chinese academics at Tianjin Finance and Economics University: Her father
taught and was editor of a journal, and her mother was in the university’s
foreign trade department and later worked with graduate students.
And last year, after seven years at MIT, Kong was granted tenure as the ITT
Career Development Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering.
Her interest in science and technology started, as it does for many people,

Is it normal to feel tired/ down after using adderall?
For the past 4 days I have been using 10mg of adderall per day. The first two days I used 10mg and the third day i used 20mg, which kept me in a state of pure focus for probably 24 hours. I do not have ADD, and these pills were not perscribed to me by a doctor. My question regards an incident that has become more apparent to me: today, after using one 10mg pill and focusing for five hours, I became extremelly tired/ exahusted, and I fell asleep for two hours. This happened to a lesser extent yesterday. Wow I feel like really out of it now, this is a really huge comedown im having- is this normal for people who take adderall i feel like im in a dream state and im lapsing in and out of my body, i feel dead exahsted for no reason whats up. thanks for the hlep
That is a completely normal experience of a "speed crash."
When people take powerful stimulants like amphetamines they will stay awake longer, focus better, feel energetic, even feel like anything can be accomplished. And those are just the mid range effects.
Amphetamines are stimulants, they are more powerful than cocaine and can keep people up for days (even weeks). But with any drug of abuse the "high" wears off and gives way to the low. People become very tired. People with a terrible amphetamine addiction (especially IV use) will often binge and be awake for days or weeks at a time but once that is done they sleep almost constantly for days. I know of a person who quit and sleep about 20hrs/day for a year.
When people are having a "speed crash" energy to do the most basic things can be hard to get. People often have rebound depression meaning that a very severe depression starts and it is worse that anything you have had. And in general people can feel strange, anxious, agitated, and angry. Feelings of depersonalization and feelings of unreality can happen. It also typically becomes Very Hard, if not impossible, to concentrate, to think, or focus on any task.
The "crash" of any drug typically consists of the opposite of what the drug does. So a person using alcohol, heroin, or Valium will have severe insomnia and become very anxious and agitated.
The reason people have a "crash" is because the amphetamines have pumped huge amounts of neurotransmitters into the brain. Those neurotransmitters are stimulants and provide pleasure in addition to the other effects of stimulants. When the drug is gone the brain has less of those important neurotransmitters because the amphetamine emptied much of it out. And without a normal amount of those stimulating neurotransmitters which help keep you awake you will just sleep and not be able to function and concentrate well. But after a little time things return back to normal. But constant use of amphetamines when they are not needed can result in severe depression because the amphetamines can actually destroy some of the cells with those important neurotransmitters and will less it is harder to be happy.
I take 60 mg/day of Adderall XR for a very severe sleeping disorder and mild ADHD. I don't have anything like what you have described but if I do stop taking them for a few days I will have a small amount of rebound depression.
