New Orleans has Mardi Gras. San Antonio has Fiesta. And we have an annual parade of transmogrified vehicles, most of them motorized, many of them jaw-dropping. There's a car that looks like a genie's bottle, one that looks like a sunflower and one that looks like a giant metal chicken. There are cars painted with intricate murals and cars that shoot fire (though not during the parade, not anymore). There are cars covered in mirrors, cars covered in beads and cars simply covered in crud. There are lowriders that do hydraulic dances and American cars painted with the American flag. There are metallic monsters with glowing eyes, improbable bicycles with wheels where no wheels should be and at least one giant motorized prom skirt
It's a sprawling mess of a parade, a mixed-up, whacked-out event that for years I've tried to understand. It changes every time I think I've grasped it. But it definitely fits this city.
25 years?
This year is billed as the 25th anniversary of the Houston Art Car Parade. But that crisp-sounding number -- 25! -- is misleading. Nothing about the parade is crisp; even its history is hard to pin down.
The Orange Show, the nonprofit behind the parade, cites 1988 as the genesis year because that was the first year that the Orange Show organized it. But actually, Houston's first real art-car parade happened two years earlier, in 1986.
Car fever had broken out in the early '80s among students at the University of Houston's old Lawndale Art and Performance Center. Fed in part by an exhibit called "Collision," which featured a Larry Fuentes-decorated car, and in part by pure Houston zeitgeist, several students made car-based art that then seemed like goofs, but now seems important. Jackie Harris created "The Fruitmobile," a rolling still life. Noah Edmondson and David Best made art go-carts, which they pitted against each other in battle. And Scott Prescott produced "The Ghetto Blaster," a rusted-out half-Impala, half-Caprice with tank treads instead of wheels, a cannon mounted on the windshield and a flamethrower in back. It didn't run, but even towed on a trailer, the thing looked evil.
For the New Music America Festival, artist Rachel Hecker and artsy salon owner Trish Herrera convinced a handful of car artists to cruise down Montrose. Their funky little parade included baton twirlers, artists carrying paintings and a herd of sexy, tough roller skaters. The parade was supposed to end at the brand-new Museum of Fine Arts sculpture garden. The plan was for the tasteful garden, designed by Isamu Noguchi, to be inaugurated at the end of the parade with the festival's main attraction, a concert by minimalist composer John Cage.
But good taste and minimalism were too neat an end for the raucous art-car spectacle. So instead of stopping politely, Prescott turned around, and with a rude roar and a cloud of black smoke, towed Ghetto Blaster up Main Street. A rock band and a bunch of lawless skaters trailed behind him - creating their own unofficial, unpermitted, legendary parade.
They weren't being good citizens. They weren't representing Houston or representing anything at all. They were just being their own wild, rebellious selves. Art cars were like that then.
