In sheens never so reflectively seen, black was the new black as a wealth of delectable darkness descended on the catwalks. This clear homage to our favourite shade literally set the tone for the season as it ran from the runways into boutiques, high streets and our online inbox.
In her trademark style, the high gloss of Ann Demeulemeester glistened in feathered blacks. Favouring Karakul and long-haired goat; Demeulemeester’s collection of coats and jumpsuits glided gracefully down the catwalk with some serious gothic glamour. Another designer famed for their deliciously dark hues, Emporio Armani tailored and trimmed a raft of sexily smart suits, jackets, dresses and accessories with fox, mink and Mongolian lamb in their inevitable no-nonsense woman about town style.
While Giles can be relied upon for some austere avant-garde within the realms of fur fashion, the Autumn/Winter 2011/12 embraced an ebony elegance with goat trims of sumptuous enveloping neck collars on coats, high-waisted or fringe hemmed voluminous skirts, taut tops and dresses from minxy minis to full-length refined evening gowns. Alexander McQueen as always perfected the shade scale between ice whites through tranquil greys to the super sheen of their blackest of blacks. For striking silhouettes, their sharp cuts could be seen in fox and lamb across dresses and coats with a magical movie mystique that invoked memories of the Oscar-winning Black Swan.
Rocha rejoiced in raven for a range that included full coats, hats and bags, or with trimmings for women, plus bringing the black in menswear in a selection of lambs and mink. Julian McDonald got down with the dark arts in mink, lamb and goat trims for a slew of obsidian-inspired coats in womenswear, as did Pierre Balmain and Gareth Pugh took it long and choppy with black coat and cape designs in both men’s and women’s designer fashion. Nicole Farhi’s sultry hues oozed sleek sensuality on her high sheen mink and sheared lamb for a Silky Smooth cut on jackets, dresses, vests and blouses or while rocking the raven biker chick look along with Carmen Marc Valvo, whereas in contrast, Jaeger presented opposing oversized modes with their loose-fitting mink coats in brassy blacks.
In addition, Giambattista Valli used glistening blacks as the baseline for his fur-lined colour blocking designs in daring dresses and statement skirts, as did Valentin Yudashkin, while Etro worked from the feet up with lamb-trimmed black buckled biker boots and Mark Fast brought the black back to accessories in fox and mink.
Fashion legends Givenchy gleamed, adding their own touch of shining class with a themed runway collection that brought forth some fierce feline fun. Their sheer black choice of styles ranged from cat-eye sunglasses to panther-enthused pointy-eared hats, topping off onyx outfits such as varsity jackets, bustiers, skirts and cardigans all in plush mink for a fabulous fur finish.
